Getting a tattoo or piercing is an exciting experience that can express your individuality and creativity. However, it’s important to remember that these are also wounds that need proper care to heal correctly and avoid complications. Here’s a comprehensive guide to tattoo and piercing aftercare to help you keep your new artwork looking its best.

Tattoos

The first 24 hours:

Leave the bandage on: The bandage your tattoo artist applied will help protect your new tattoo from dirt, bacteria, and moisture. Keep it on for the recommended amount of time, typically 2-4 hours.

Wash your hands thoroughly: Before touching your tattoo, always wash your hands with antibacterial soap and warm water. This will prevent the spread of bacteria that could cause an infection.

Gently wash your tattoo: After removing the bandage, gently wash your tattoo with antibacterial soap and lukewarm water. Pat it dry with a clean, lint-free towel. Avoid scrubbing or using harsh soaps, as this can irritate the skin.

Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free lotion: Use a fragrance-free lotion specifically designed for tattoo aftercare. Apply a thin layer to keep your tattoo moist and prevent scabbing. Avoid using petroleum-based products, as these can clog pores and hinder the healing process.

Wear loose-fitting clothing: Avoid wearing tight clothing that rubs against your tattoo, as this can cause irritation and discomfort.

Avoid touching your tattoo: Unless you’re washing it or applying lotion, avoid touching your tattoo. This will help prevent the spread of bacteria and keep it clean.

The next few days:

Continue washing your tattoo 2-3 times a day: Follow the same gentle washing procedure as described above.

Keep your tattoo moisturized: Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free lotion after each washing.

Avoid picking at scabs or peeling skin: Scabs and peeling skin are part of the healing process. Picking at them can delay healing and increase the risk of scarring.

Protect your tattoo from the sun: UV rays can damage your new tattoo and cause fading. Keep it covered with clothing or use a high-SPF sunscreen.

Avoid swimming, hot tubs, and saunas: These activities can expose your tattoo to bacteria and irritate the skin. Wait until your tattoo is fully healed before engaging in these activities.

Full healing:

Most tattoos take 2-4 weeks to heal completely. During this time, continue to follow the aftercare instructions carefully.

Once your tattoo is healed, you can switch to a regular moisturizer.

Piercings

The first few days:

Wash your piercing 2-3 times a day: Use a saline solution or a gentle antibacterial soap and lukewarm water. Avoid using harsh soaps or rubbing alcohol.

Soak your piercing: Soak your piercing in a saline solution for 5-10 minutes several times a day. This will help clean the area and reduce swelling.

Avoid touching your piercing: Unless you’re cleaning it or soaking it, avoid touching  your piercing. This will help prevent the spread of bacteria and keep it clean.

Don’t change your jewelry: Your piercer will give you specific instructions on when it’s safe to change your jewelry. Don’t change it before the recommended time, as this can irritate the piercing and delay healing.

Avoid harsh chemicals: Avoid using harsh chemicals, such as soap, shampoo, or hairspray, on or near your piercing.

Avoid sleeping on your piercing: This can put pressure on the piercing and cause discomfort.

The next few weeks:

Continue washing your piercing 1-2 times a day.

Keep your piercing clean and dry.

Avoid playing with your piercing. This can irritate the piercing and prolong the healing process.

Full healing:

Most piercings take 4-6 weeks to heal completely. During this time, continue to follow the aftercare instructions carefully.

Once your piercing is healed, you can switch to a regular cleansing routine.
